A sustainable building is one which can be operated over the long term without adversely affecting the natural environment necessary to support future generations. With all the projects we undertake we strive to meet the needs of our clients design requirements whilst maximising the sustainability of the building.
Site choice and site modification are initial considerations. We have gone to the lengths of finding another site for one of our clients to avoid major earth moving requirements.
Design plays a crucial role in the energy efficiency of a building. Orientation on the plot is important to for using the suns heat and light to the best advantage. Once the energy source is selected, position on the plot can also be influenced by the positioning of solar panels or heat storage units and heat exchangers. Window shading is very important for south and west facing facades. Good insulation is extremely important to thermal efficiency and the width of walls must be known at an early design stage.
Choice of a renewable energy source is most advisable when it is predicted that fuel prices will double by 2015. With the constant source of solar energy in this part of the world, it is the obvious choice. Heat storage units which can be placed underground are available, and heat exchange systems can be considered.
